SOUTH ORKNEYS - FIRST DAY COVER WITH CONTENTS EX "BRITISH BRANSFIELD EXPEDITION, GRAHAMLAND"; 15/21 Feb. 1944 env. (with contents) ex "A. Taylor" on board SS 'Fitzroy' registered to his aunt in Leith with h.s. "FIRST DAY COVER" and having S. Orkneys ½d pair + 3d tied by a very fine purple "South Orkneys" cds (21 Feb.) and having no Naval censor mark or label. Posted on board by Captain- Taylor before she left Port Lockroy, and posted when the ship arrived at the South Orkneys. Unusual First Day cover with a rare usage of the "Bransfield Expedition" name at the head of the contents which include "...it's a bleak and barren country of ice, snow and rocks, [but] we have plenty of stores...".
