Scenes of the Crucifixion with profuse amounts of blood pouring forth from the wounds of Christ as depicted in the offered lot are well-known in Spanish and Spanish Colonial paintings from the 17th century through the 18th century. The offered lot reflects certain elements of a number of artists working in Mexico and other Spanish colonies in the New World in the 18th century including Juan Patricio Morlete Ruiz (Mexican 1713-1770)
