The Spanish Colonial School refers to the art produced in the Spanish colonies in the Americas, Asia, and Africa during the period of Spanish colonisation, which lasted from the late 15th century to the 19th century. The art of this period is characterised by a fusion of Spanish and indigenous traditions, as well as the influence of other European styles.

Spanish Colonial School painting encompasses a variety of genres, including religious art, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Many of the works produced during this period were commissioned by the Catholic Church, which played a dominant role in colonial life and society.

As with the present work religious paintings were the most common form of art produced during this period, and they often depicted scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints. These works were typically highly ornamental and decorative, featuring bright colours, gold leaf, and intricate details.
