[ translate ]

HARRIET WHITNEY FRISHMUTH (American 1880-1980)
Diana (The Hunt) - circa 1925
Bronze with verdigris and dark brown patina
Inscribed on base "HARRIET FRISHMUTH KARL ILLAVA" and further inscribed along edge of base "Amer Art F'dry N.Y."
Height 25 inches (63.5 cm), length 21.75 inches (52.5 cm) and on the original marble base with beveled edge

Provenance
From the artist to James Ford Bell (1879-1961) c. 1928 and thence by decent through the family to the current owner, the grandson of James Ford Bell.

James Ford Bell was a well-known philanthropist, wildlife conservationist, book collector and founder of General Mills, Minneapolis Minnesota. According to the family, the offered bronze was for years displayed in Belford, the family's mansion on Lake Minnetonka, Minneapolis Minnesota. It is likely that Bell was introduced to Frishmuth's work through utilities magnate and fellow Minneapolis resident Wilbur B. Foshay (1881-1957) who commissioned a large piece by Frishmuth (Papillion) which was unveiled at his Foshay Tower Gallery, in Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 21, 1928.

The dogs exhibiting more verdigris, whereas Diana being more dark brown, although with some small scattered areas exhibiting some very light spots of green patina. There are two small (thin linear) light surface rubs to patina, one to the left knee on the lower thigh (not a gauge or scratch), and a similar rub to the patina on the right hip. Both measuring about 2 to 2.5 cm in length. Otherwise the overall surface is unaffected with no abnormalities or defects with the exception of dust and dirt in crevices. Additionally, the rear part of the bow is a refabricated replacement piece.
