SPECTACULAR JAPANESE LACQUER WRITING BOX, MEIJI. Comprising a large and impressive document, or writing box. The rectangular form with tapered sides, banded with elliptical reserves, decorated on three sides with gilt embellished corn and on one side a grasshopper. The overhanging fitted lid with medallion reserve, depicting a spectacular parrot resting on a corn stalk. The interior also lacquered with gilt flecks. The underside artist signed Midorijima Saku. Length 13.5 inches, width 10.25 inches, height 4.25 inches (34.5 x 26 x 11 cm).

Condition Report: Overall very good condition. Ultraviolet black light examination reveals no restoration or repairs. The surface of the lid and the sides of box undisturbed as is the interior. The underside of box base does show shelf wear including some visible scratches in lacquer. Otherwise a very fine specimen.
