STAMPED "J.M. BARLOW" WASHINGTON COUNTY, VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "2" gallon capacity mark, cylindrical form with incised ring below the flat-top rounded rim, Albany-slip glazed interior. Brushed cobalt upright tulip decoration repeated three times. J.M. Barlow (b.1856), Washington Co., VA. 1880-1896.
Condition: Square shaped freeze crack above base and onto underside, having moderate shallow chip and hairline to rim, moderate discoloration. Firing imperfections, including glaze pops, as made.
Size: 9 1/2" H, 9" D rim.
Provenance: Catalogue Note: According to White, there are few known Barlow vessels bearing cobalt decoration. She theorized pieces featuring such designs may have been made while Barlow's pottery was based near Osceloa, Virginia. His neighbor and possible pottery owner at that time was J.B. Magee, whose stoneware vessels often exhibited a similar floral cobalt design.
