STAMPED "JM BARLOW" WASHINGTON COUNTY, VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity, wide-mouth form with irregular flat-top rim. Brushed cobalt upright floral decoration to both sides. J.M. Barlow (b.1856), Washington Co., VA. 1880-1896.
Condition: Rim having chip and two moderate hairlines, one approximately 6" L.
Size: 7 3/4" H, 8 5/8" D rim.
Provenance: Provenance: Property from the estate collection of Dan and Doris Chrisman, Roanoke, VA.Catalogue Note: According to White, there are few known Barlow vessels bearing cobalt decoration. She theorized pieces featuring such designs may have been made while Barlow's pottery was based near Osceloa, Virginia. His neighbor and possible pottery owner at that time was J.B. Magee, whose stoneware vessels often exhibited a similar floral cobalt design.
