STAMPED "MARION, VA." VIRGINIA STONEWARE FACE JUG, green alkaline glaze, expressive form featuring thin raised eyebrows, beady clay eyes, a protruding nose, large exaggerated lips with four china teeth, and semi-circular ears with small ear holes. Choctaw Indian Pottery, Marion, VA, possibly E.J. Brown Sr. (1897-1980). Circa 1930. 6" H.
Undamaged, chips to edge of base, as made.
Provenance: Property from the estate collection of Dan and Doris Chrisman, Roanoke, VA.
Catalogue Note: The similarity between this jug and those produced at the Brown Pottery of Arden, North Carolina, is most likely due to its manufacture by Evan Javan (E.J.) Brown Sr. Brown was also employed at the Marion, Virginia Choctaw Indian Pottery at various times over a several year period.
