STAMPED "N. FOX", CHATHAM CO., NORTH CAROLINA STONEWARE DIMINUTIVE JUG, salt-glazed, approximately one-quart capacity, graceful ovoid form with short neck, rounded mouth, and strap handle. Inscribed "N. FOX" on front. Nicholas Fox (1797-1858), Chatham Co., NC. Circa 1840. 8" H, 3 1/2" D base.
Glaze roughness to mouth, one glaze flake to neck, and two glaze flakes to handle with small hole to base, otherwise undamaged.
Literature: Parallels Perry - North Carolina Pottery, p. 101, fig. 171 for a larger, but otherwise virtually identical example in the collection of the Mint Museums, Hewitt & Sweezy - The Potter's Eye - Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery, p. 85.
Provenance: Property from the estate collection of Dan and Doris Chrisman, Roanoke, VA.
Catalogue Note: Nicholas learned the potting trade from his father, Jacob Fox. His two sons Himer Jacob and Daniel Gray Fox, followed in their father's footsteps and also became potters.
Condition Report: Glaze roughness to mouth, one glaze flake to neck, and two glaze flakes to handle with small hole to base, otherwise undamaged.
