STAMPED "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG", SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed with slip wash, "4" gallon capacity mark, cylindrical form with squared rim and arched handles. Brushed cobalt dropped flower and double feather decoration both sides, additional cobalt at handle terminals. The pottery of Samuel Leonard Bell (1811-1891) and/or his sons Richard Franklin, Turner Ashby, and Charles Forrest. 1882-1905.
Condition: Moderate chip to base edge, shallow chip to edge of rim, and radial hairline to base. Firing imperfections, including significant discoloration, kiln kisses, and glazed over chip to handle, as made.
Size: 14 7/8" H, 9 3/4" D rim.
