STANISLAS VICTOR EDOUARD LEPINE (CAEN 1835-1892 PARIS) 'L'Africaine', after Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828) Signed S. Lepine (lower right) oil on canvas, laid to panel 19 x 13.5 cm The original watercolour and gouache work by Bonington is dated to 1827 and titled “An Indian Maid” [No. 371 in the catalogue Raisonne by Patrick Noon]. In 1829 the work was engraved by Sangster for the ‘Bijou’ (4th Oct Ed.), and given the title “African Daughter”. Despite his very early death at the age of 26, the work of Bonington, especially to the French School, was championed by his friends Eugene Delacroix, and Jean Baptiste Camille Corot.
