'STAR OF THE WEST' SHIP MODEL BY SHIP'S CARPENTER, NEW
Model of the first ship fired on in the Civil War, built by Charles Fulwood (Ship's Carpenter), while working on the original ship in Mr. Webb's Shipyard in New York. Two-Masted wooden hull, sidewheeler with walking beam stem drive, in molded walnut column case with feet and cannonball finials, 18 1/4" x 29 3/4" x 9 1/2". Good condition. She was fired on while attempting to deliver reinforcements and supplies to Fort Sumter, the first shots of the War. The ship was later captured by Confederate forces, then used for several purposes including as a hospital ship and a blockade runner, and finally scuttled in defense of Vicksburg in 1863.
