Originally founded in 1871 by a number of prominent individuals and companies from Stockholm. It focused on providing financial services to businesses in Sweden's capital. In the early 20th century, the Swedish bank sector underwent a consolidation wave. StockholmsHandelsbought the Bankaktiebolaget Norra Sverige in 1914 and the Norrlandsbanken in 1917. In 1919, the bank merged with BankaktiebolagetSödraSverige and was renamed into the still-existing Svenska Handelsbanken.
