STONE, Edmund - Analise [sic] des infiniment petits, comprenant le calcul intégral dans son étendue; avec son application aux quadratures, rectifications.
Description: 4to: civ-162-[2] pp.; 4 folding pl. (some pages sl. browned). - French translation of Stone's supplement on integral calculus (in Newtonian terms "the inverse method of fluxions") to L' Hôpital's great standard textbook on Leibniz' differential calculus, entitled "Analyse des infiniment petits" (1st ed.: 1696). E. Stone (1700-1768), a self-taught mathematician, rendered L'Hôpital's influential text available to the English-speaking world with the title "The Method of Fluxions, both Direct and Inverse" (1st ed.: 1730). The fact that Stone's supplement to this work was translated back into French indicates the growing interest in Newton's fluxions, in France during the 1730s. Engr. ill.: 4 pl. with diagrams. - Ref. De Backer/Sommervogel II, 829 n. 6. - BL London. - BnF. - Prov. Mod. bookpl.
Artist Name: STONE, Edmund Circa: 1735
Condition: Contemp. half calf, marbled paper covers (weak upper joint, spine sl. soiled).
