STRIDING BULL

[ translate ]

Probably Italy, 17th / 18th century. After a model by Giovanni da Bologna, known as Giambologna (Douai 1529-1608 Florence), and Antonio Susini (1558-1624).
Dark-patinated bronze. Mounted on an ebonized wooden base.
H 9.5 cm; H with base 23 cm.

One hind leg is somewhat bent.

The model of the striding bull on offer goes back to a work by Giambologna, who, in turn, based his work on a model from Antiquity. The original model was made for Cosimo de Medici in 1573 and is now in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence. The model was interpreted several times in later centuries and cast in slight variations. A version that is very similar to the bull of offer can be found in Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire (NT 515167). Its casting is dated between 1600 and 1700.
