STUNNING COMPLETE CHALCIDIAN HELMET WITH DECORATED CHEEKPIECES

Ca. 500 - 400 BC.
An Amazing Chalcidian helmet comprised of hammered tin bronze. This form of helmet was distinguished by its curved decorated cheekpieces with hammered circles and dots around a line. The same motif is on the main part of the helmet where the cheek pieces are fixed. A nose guard extends from the raised curves demarcating the eyes. The forehead has a sweeping central ridge and an overhanging brow line. The sides allow the ears to be left open, improving battlefield communication. This helmet form was initially depicted on pottery believed to derive from the Euboean city of Chalcis. For similar see: MEt Museum Accession Number: 04.27.3.
