SUSAN SONTAG (1933-2004); HOWARD HODGKIN (1932–2017) SIX ETCHINGS WITH AQUATINTS, WITH HAND-COLORING IN EGG TEMPERA, 1991 THE WAY WE LIVE NOW Signed in pencil by both Susan Sontag and Howard Hodgkin. Number 92 in an edition of 200 books (plus 25 Artist Proofs, 7 Printer's Proofs, 5 hors commerce copies and 6 copies numbered in Roman numerals for presentation). Comprising of six lift-ground etchings with aquatints printed in colors, each with extensive hand-coloring in egg tempera by Howard Hodgkin, each on Fabriano Ingres Avorio 160 gsm paper , tissue guards, original boards, hand-painted dust-jacket (extending onto flaps), acetate guards, original glacine wrapper, with publisher's original packaging. Printed by Jack Shirreff, 107 Workshop, Box, Wiltshire, published by Karsten Schubert, London. Hailed as one of the finest of 20th Century artist's books by Riva Castleman in "A Century of Artists Books," Sontag's account of the devastation of AIDS graphically interpreted by Hodgkin is a powerful work. All proceeds from the sale of the limited edition were donated by the artists to various AIDS charities and immediately sold out upon publication.
