Saint Anthony. 18th century. Oil on canvas. Pilgrim canvas, novo-Hispanic. An example of the devotional character that this type of pieces had in the Mexican Baroque. The main characteristic of these paintings was their mobile nature, as they were paintings that allowed them to be easily transported, when they were rolled up, remaining housed inside their own container box. This was important for the pilgrim devotional practice to which they were destined, as they could be displayed in public as a banner, as a doctrinal object. Some of these works conserve the box and the turned piece of wood, others only conserve the painting on canvas and part of the elements that differentiate this type of works from the paintings on conventional canvas, such as fragments of the wooden strip that features this piece.
