Saint George. Carved, polychromed and gilded wooden sculpture. Swabia. Germany. Gothic. Circa 1490.
This type of sculpture, depicting young and handsome saints such as Saint George, Saint Michael the Archangel, etc, dressed in late Gothic armour, was at its peak towards the end of the 15th century, in the geographical area in which we have situated this sculpture.
Its marvellous original polychrome and gilding is preserved.
This sculpture seems to us to be very similar to Muchael Pacher´s Saint George, dated in 1480, which is kept at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The lance is a later addition.
