Saint George Carved, polychromed and gilded wooden

[ translate ]

Saint George Carved, polychromed and gilded wooden sculpture with estofado technique and coloured silver. Flemish School. Gothic. Second half of the 15th century.
Magnificent equestrian depiction of Saint George killing the dragon, one of the most popular images of the saint during the Middle Ages, in which good, represented by Christianity, triumphs over evil or sin.
Instead of being depicted in the customary way as young and beardless, in this sculpture the saint is little older, with a beard and moustache.
The sculptor shows great mastery over the scene in which the dragon is under the horse´s hooves, turning menacingly towards Saint George, who pierces its mouth with a lance whilst the horse prances elegantly.
As Doctor Jose Luis Romero Torres notes in his report on this Saint George: "Due to the features and the armour that we have analysed and the prancing posture of the horse, we consider this to be a 15th century sculpture of the Central European School, closest to Flemish, in which gothic elements, like the composition, are mixed with other elements which have a new and more classical sensibility of anatomy, such as the posture of the horse and the depiction of Saint George."
The lot includes Doctor José Luis Romero Torres´ report.
111 x 82 x 35 cm.
