Third edition of Saint Gregory's exposition on Job, in a contemporary binding. One of the most highly regarded and widely read patristic texts of the period, Gregory’s commentary begins with a literal interpretation of the sufferings of Job before drawing out the mystical and allegorical meanings. Royal folio (391 x 290mm). 329 leaves. Large red and blue initials, red and blue Lombard capitals and paragraph marks, and some yellow capital strokes (first leaf a bit soiled and repaired, including tear in text, final leaf soiled and heavily restored, some toning and spotting, occasional dampstains). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, brass catchplates and straps (rebacked and rear board recornered, some other restorations, new straps). Provenance: two erased stamps, marginalia.
