Saint Hubertus

[ translate ]

Greek Icon, tempera on wood, 18th century, 27 x 18. Hubertus was born around 656, probably in Toulouse, the eldest son and apparent heir of Bertrand, Duke of Aquitaine. [1] As a youth, Hubert was sent to the Neustrian court of Theuderic III in Paris. Like many nobles of that time, Hubert was addicted to hunting. But the tyrannical behavior of the mayor of the Neustrian palace, Ebroin, caused an emigration of the nobles to the court of Austrasia in Metz. Hubert soon joined them. He was warmly received by Pepin of Heristal, mayor of the palace, who almost immediately made him grand master of the household.

He is the patron saint of hunters, mathematicians, opticians and metalworkers. Known as the "Apostle of the Ardennes", he was called upon to cure rabies through the use of the traditional St. Hubert's Key until the early 20th century
