Northern artist active in Venice, circa 1610 - 1620
Saint Jerome in a landscape

an oval, oil on copper
copper: 2¾ by 2 in.; 7 by 5.1 cm.
framed: 6⅞ by 5⅛ in.; 17.4 by 13 cm.

Condition Report:
The painting itself is in overall good condition with good retention of detail in the distant landscape and the figure. The metal is planar. There are small losses of paint at the extreme edges as visible in the unframed photograph online. The surface of the painting is slightly dirty and under a dry varnish, and a surface clean would make the palette of the work stronger. There are good, very fine touches of gilt in the painting, along the edge of Jerome's robe, his halo and even around the head of the Christ on the crucifix lower left. There are small losses in the sky and the foliage at left, visible in the image. Under UV, just a few small touches visible, mostly in the foliage at left. This small copper is set into a 19th Century gilt frame and dark passe-partout. It if further encased in a leather case which opens up at center.
