Saint John the Evangelist and a priest, Francesco di Gentile da Fabriano

[ translate ]

Francesco di Gentile da Fabriano
active in the Marche, second half of the 15th century
Saint John the Evangelist and a priest

oil on panel
panel: 22 by 7⅝ in.; 55.8 by 19.3 cm.
framed: 24⅜ by 10⅛ in.; 61.9 by 25.7 cm.

Condition Report:
The thin panel is uncradled, stable, and has a faint vertical bow. Once double sided, it has been separated from its reverse, likely sometime during the 20th century. The panel likely once formed one wing of a larger altarpiece, and there are some losses to the edge of the panel where hardware would have once attached it to a central element. There are some additional losses of paint at these extreme edges. The overall image reads strongly, though the paint surface is somewhat dirty and the varnish has dulled. The paint surface is stable. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish that impedes some inspection. Some more recent retouching and strengthening are visible under UV, primarily in the shadows of the figures' costumes, along the lower edge, and in the hair of the saint. Not much recent retouching is visible in the faces of both figures. Some of the retouching that is visible under UV is also visible to the naked eye. Offered in a modern wood frame.
