Orthodox Icon, 19th century, tempera on wooden board, size 17 x 21 cm, The holy, glorious and all-laudable Apostle and Evangelist John is also known as John the Theologian. His primary feast day is celebrated on May 8, that of the twelve apostles on June 30, and his repose on September 26. Most icons with John the Theologian as a subject strive to depict the profundity and the learnedness of the saint in one manner or another, for that reason the separate theme “John the Theologian in Silence” has arisen.
