Saint Michael. Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Southern Germany. Gothic. 15th century.
In our opinion, this sculpture has a great deal in common with the work of the Master Michael Pacher, who was active in Salzburg from 1460 - 1498, and his circle, as well as with Hans Leinberger (Bavaria, 1480-1531), for the similar elongated treatment of the faces and their white faces, which refers us to the Saint Stephen that is preserved in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York
The depiction of the young saint is very characteristic – dressed in late Gothic armour, very much used in the South of Germany and Austria, with the characteristic posture of the body in an "S" shape. The particular type of drapery and elaborate treatment of the hair and facial features also reinforce our idea of the origin of the sculpture.
The figure of the devil is not complete.
