Saint Peter, Workshop of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino
Workshop of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino
(Cento 1591 - 1666 Bologna)
Saint Peter
oil on canvas
canvas: 24 by 20⅜ in.; 61 by 51.8 cm.
framed: 33¾by 29⅞ in.; 85.7 by 75.9 cm.
Condition Report:
The painting has a modern lining and is stable on its stretcher. The overall image reads somewhat clearly beneath an old, discolored, and varnish that appears uneven near the edges. Some passages, particularly those in shadow, have thinned and sunk with age and in the relining process, for example, in the left portion of Peter's face, beard, and shoulder, as well as in his costume. There are some small pin dots of stable loss here and there, and there is an old and thin retouched repair that in Peter's neck. Inspection under UV reveals a thick and milky varnish that impedes further inspection. There are some very fine cosmetic spots of retouching in Peter's nose, his knuckle, and in the repair at his neck. Some more broadly applied spots of retouching fluoresce in the background and are visible to the naked eye. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
