Salim Martowiredjo (b. Kroya, C. Java, 1941) Bermain Dakon (Playing Dakon)
Dakon is a traditional game known by various names throughout Indonesia. Generally this game is called 'Congklak', there are also other names for this game such as Makaotan, Congkak, Maggaleceng and others. Usually in games, a kind of clam shell is used as a dakon seed, and if it is not available, sometimes it is also used as seeds from plants and small stones. It is a game of strategy and children learn the application of maths in the game. The game’s use of shells or plant seeds is meant to remind children of the country’s biodiversity, although today it might be viewed differently. The artist Salim Martowiredjo paints two young girls playing the dakon game, while a third girl is seen watching them with a critical eye.
