Salmon P. Chase as OH Governor Signed Appointment

A document signed by then Governor of Ohio Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873), as "S.P. Chase" at lower right. Issued from Columbus, Ohio on November 7, 1859. Also co-signed by Addison Peale Russell (1826-1912), who served as Ohio Secretary of State between 1858-1862, as "A.P. Russell" at lower center. Bearing a green embossed Ohio state seal at lower left. Partly printed and partly manuscript on paper. Expected paper folds, wrinkles, and light soiling. An isolated tear near the right edge and a few chipped edges, else very good. 12" x 9.5."

Governor Salmon P. Chase appointed one Thomas Ellison (1822-1868) as Treasurer of Adams County for a two-year term. Adams County is located about 68 miles southeast of Cincinnati. Genealogical records indicate that Ellison served as a sutler during the Civil War, and then relocated to Mississippi as a cotton farmer.

Chase served as Governor of Ohio between 1856-1860, and later helped establish the Republican Party. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by Abraham Lincoln after losing his Republican Party 1860 presidential bid. In this capacity, he vigorously financed the Union war effort and championed the usage of paper currency between 1861-1864. Lincoln appointed Chase Chief Justice of the Supreme Court following his cabinet resignation; he presided over the 1868 Andrew Johnson impeachment trial among other landmark cases.
