Salt Glaze Stoneware Bee Sting Jug
16 inches high. A 19th-century American salt-glazed stoneware whiskey jug of ovoid form, constructed with a single strap handle and a flared mouth. The vessel features a two-tone appearance typical of wood-fired kiln production, with a light gray-buff upper body transitioning to a heavily toasted, iron-rich brown slip effect on the lower half and sides. The shoulder is decorated with freehand cobalt blue slip, including a hand-painted numeral 3 indicating a three-gallon capacity above a stylized bee sting or spiral motif. A large circular kiln kiss is present on the shoulder near the decoration. The base shows an irregular dark-toned surface with textural marks near the edge that are not legible as characters or a maker's name. The underside displays shelf wear and soot staining from the firing process. Four circular white felt pads are applied to the base. Capacity: 3 Gallons.
