Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) - La caduta dei giganti

Famous work by Salvator Rosa, "the fall of the giants" created in the mid-1600s with a mixed technique of etching and burin.

Large work, 70 x 50. 5 cm.
second state of two with dedication to Horatio Quaranta.

Contemporary edition on laid and watermarked paper; watermark "lily flower in double circle on letter B".

Good conservation conditions, after restoration, (there is a gap on the upper margin in correspondence with the sky, restored and retouched chromatically and graphically, and small tears restored along the margins) .

The subject is derived from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' and narrates the disastrous fall of the giants who, having ascended Olympus, provoked the wrath of Jupiter.
The etching was conceived so that a potential client could finance a large painting with the same subject.
The project was in vain and the painting was never created, although the inscription at the bottom bears the word 'pinxit'.
