Ein erhaben stehender, mehrere kniende, sitzende, sich aufrichtende Gestalten: Ähnliche Kompositionen von Salvator Rosa sind auch aus weiteren Werken des Künstlers bekannt. So ist etwa bei der Fototeca Zeri unter Nummer 47115 eine Erzengeldarstellung dokumentiert, deren Lichtführung und kompositionelles Schema dem hier angebotenen Gemälde ähnlich sind. In caravaggesker Lichtführung zeichnen sich die von dem Engel erleuchteten Gestalten (Petrus wird durch einen am Boden liegenden Schlüssel personifiziert) ab und Putti in einer Wolkenlichtung weisen den Weg. The painting shows one person standing elevated, several kneeling ad sitting figures and also several figures in the process of sitting up. Other similar compositions by Rosa are well known, for example an Archangel painting listed at the Fototeca Zeri with no. 47115 – the artists guidance of light and its composition are similar. The figures are lit up in a Caravaggio-like style by the angel, while putti guide the way in an opening in the clouds and Saint Peter is personified by a key, lying on the ground. (Book of Acts, 12:6-7).
