Salvator Rosa, circle of
River landscape with fishermen
Oil on canvas (relined). 87.5 x 149.5 cm.
River landscape with fishermen
The present landscape, framed by a rocky crag on the right and a characteristic tree on the left, closely relates to a series of river and seascapes paintings produced by Salvator Rosa from his youth in Naples onwards with increasing success and in ex-tensive variations.
Salvator Rosa found a great success and was largely imitated by his contemporaries: for the present painting, its bold palette and its dramatic contrast in the sky and clouds, the name of Giovanni Ghisolfi has been recently suggested.
Provenance
Private collection, Italy.
