This work on paper was made just after Sam Middleton settled in Amsterdam. Middleton is best known for his multimedia works in collage, and his association with jazz music. He first left the U.S. for Mexico in 1955 before moving to Europe, living in Spain, Sweden and Denmark. After finally settling in the Netherlands in 1962, Middleton established himself as one of its leading artists. The Whitney Museum of American Art included Middleton in its 1962 group exhibition 40 Artists Under 40 .
