The Funeral Procession of Arthur, Duke of Wellington Overall 13.3 x 2062cm

The Funeral Procession of Arthur, Duke of Wellington
hand-coloured aquatint panorama on 56 sheets, one sheet extended in height to show the funeral carriage, with the mourners and regiments listed below the images, published in 1853 by Ackermann, London, within 15 gilded and ebonized frames (15)
Overall 13.3 x 2062cm

The state funeral of the Duke of Wellington took place at St Paul's Cathedral in London on 18 November 1852, preceded by a spectacular 10,000 strong procession. The magnitude and splendour of the occasion is conveyed in the detail and scale of this work which, at 65 feet in length, is one of the longest continuous strip panoramas known. As with depictions of the return of Napoleon's body to Paris, there is a great sense of reverence for a national military hero.
