Samuel Blatchford ALS Scarce Supreme Court Member

Bi-fold letter on lightly lined paper, with second leaf laid into another sheet. The original letter sheet size is 8.75" x 11", with the second sheet being 9.5" x 13". Dated "December 22, 1840" , and signed by Samuel Blatchford as "Saml Blatchford". Near fine, with integral address to the last page. From the famous Supreme Court collection of Scott Petersen.

A lovely scarce letter shown in part:

"... the Geologists will remain in employ until the first of January 1842 ... include in the estimates ... One hundred and four thousand dollars ..."

Blatchford accepted his first judicial appointment on May 3, 1867, to the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York. Five years later he was elevated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. On March 22, 1882, President Chester A. Arthur nominated Blatchford to the Supreme Court of the United States. The Senate confirmed the appointment two weeks later. Blatchford served on the Supreme Court for eleven years. He died on July 7, 1893, at the age of seventy-three.
