Samuel Bough, RSA,
British 1822-1878-
Eel traps on the Thames; and A river landscape with a man fishing and ruins behind;
watercolours on paper, both signed 'Sam Bough' (lower left), the second dated '1856' (lower left), each 24.5 x 35 cm., two (2).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Sam Bough was an English-born landscape painter who worked in Scotland for most of his career. Although self-taught, he worked closely with a number of significant contemporaries, including painters Sir Daniel Macnee (1806-1882), who served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy, and Alexander Fraser (1827-1899). The present works are particularly charming views of the British countryside, conveying a powerful sense of tranquility and peace, disturbed only by the movement of the water and the rustling foliage.
