Samuel Bough, RSA,
British 1822-1878-

Two landscapes: Blue and Gold Sunset; and The Long Walk, Windsor Park;

the first pastel heightened with white on paper, the second watercolour heightened with white on paper, the first signed and dated 'S. Bough 1851' (lower left), the second signed, dated and titled 'Sam Bough 1874 The Long Walk Windsor Park' (lower left), the first bears a label for 'THE HANOVER GALLERY / ALFRED NELSON' and another label with partially indistinct inscription 'Sam Bough / Blue & gold sunset / A gift to the Modern Arts Association / Mr Blythe (Pres) Mr G.[?] Hole Sec: 31 ...' attached to the backing board, the first 26.5 x 36.1 cm, the second 25 x 35.2 cm., two (2).

Provenance:
(the first) with The Hanover Gallery, Edinburgh.
(both) Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Sam Bough was an English-born landscape painter who worked in Scotland for most of his career. Although self-taught, he worked closely with a number of significant contemporaries, including painters Sir Daniel Macnee (1806-1882), who served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy, and Alexander Fraser (1827-1899). The present works demonstrate his interest in depicting a variety of landscape views. The forest landscape highlights his skill in capturing the texture and form of trees, while the harbour scene demonstrates his ability to depict dramatic skies. Indeed, similarly theatrical skies are depicted by the artist in works which sold at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, on 9 December 2021, lot 62 (£2,375) and on 5 December 2019, lot 30 (£1,875).
