Samuel Palmer (British, 1805-1881) Harvest field near Tivoli, mid-1840s Watercolor and pencil on paper laid on board 15-3/8 x 19-3/4 inches (39.1 x 50.2 cm) Inscribed on the mat: Harvest Field near Tivoli by S. Palmer, R.W.S. PROVENANCE: Private collection, California, circa 1950s; Thence by descent to the present owner. We are grateful to Colin Harrison for his help in cataloguing this lot. According to Dr. Harrison, the watercolor "is based on Palmer's sketches in Italy, in particular the monastery of La Vocatella near Corpo di Cava. Two similar compositions include the monastery, one listed in Lister's catalogue raisonné as no. 311, and another sold at Christie's 10 July 2012, lot 147. Condition Report: Sheet has light overall paper discoloration with one small spot of more notable discoloration at upper right corner; a faint possible vertical hairline abrasion along right edge; framed under glass.
