Samuel Prout, OWS,
British 1783-1852-

Fishermen mending sails;

watercolour heightened with white and scratching out on paper, 28.6 x 37.9 cm.

Provenance:
with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London [DB2805].
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Prout's distinctive watercolours earned him the praise of contemporaries, particularly that of the eminent art critic John Ruskin (1819-1900). His topographical studies of streets and picturesque landscapes, in Britain and on the Continent, are both highly detailed and atmospheric. The present works effectively sets the static coastal cottage, with its crumbling bricks, against the swell of the sea beyond, culminating in waves gently crashing onto the shore.
