Entries are made in pencil, most days filled in but there are gaps, everybody needs some days off, it seems. The first entry is Jan. 1, 1896, "Went on duty with Geo. Norris was on Parker St. at 2-20 am when fire alarm 71 sounded for fire on Sansome & Green St. house 59 in which woman perished said to be Mrs. Haskell box struck by Phill McCarthy." Various other fire alarms are noted, an occasional arrest - most for drunkenness - and when things get dull, you can harass a hobo: "Went with messrs. Davis, Frezell, Alderman and Moody looking for tramps found one Burk arrested him for track walking arrested William Brehman drunk." Looking for tramps was a fairly regular activity. Saturday Sept. 12 was particularly eventful, in addition to arresting a drunk, there was a "fight on a street car a Negro struck the conductor in the face at 11:20. Fight on Taylor St,. between the Wallack boys about 1.50 am saw 3 men go into Coyles & 5 come out in 15 min." The year ended as it started, on December 31, 1896, "Fire alarm from box 17 at 10.08 p.m. Fire in N.S. Beebes stove store n. 2 Sutter St. Gutted the whole store..."
Condition Report: Very good or better, quite well preserved.
