Each volume signed by Sandow Birk at colophon, as issued. Each full-page lithograph individually signed by the artist. Sandow Birk is renowned for his nine-year project American Qu'ran in which he hand-transcribed the entire Qur'an according to historic Islamic traditions and illuminated the text with scenes from contemporary American life. Here is its Christian antecedent, his interpretation of Dante. "Birk's images, based on Gustave Doré's 19th century engravings, along with text translated in collaboration with Marcus Sanders, create a full-fledged and entirely new version of Dante's classic."
