A LARGE JAIN PILLAR STONE FRAGMENT, 12TH - 14TH CENTURY

India, Rajasthan. The carved stone of a pale ivory tone with depictions of various deities and adoring figures amid structural and ornamental elements, the central goddess flanked by two columns, all beneath two petaled ornaments of round shape.

Provenance

From a noted private collection in Belgium acquired in india between 1983 and 1986

Condition

Good condition, commensurate with age, extensive wear and losses, remnants of white slip and green pigment, erosion and natural cracks.

Jainism flourished in Western India between the 10th and 12th centuries, with many temples commissioned under the Solanki and Later Pratihara dynasties.

Auction result comparison: Compare with a related Jain marble at Christie’s New York in Indian and Southeast Asian Art on 21 March 2007, lot 264, sold for USD 24,000.
