Sarah (Sadie) Griffin Cavitt Gideon (American, 1880-1954) Sunday Morning Oil on board 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cm) Signed lower right: Sadie Cavitt Gideon Born in Bryan, Texas, Sarah Griffin "Sadie" Cavitt attended Hollins College in Virginia and studied painting at Massachusetts Normal Art School and in France at the American School of Fine Arts at Fontainebleau. She likely met her future husband, painter Samuel E. Gideon, in France. Sadie Gideon and her husband painted in Texas, New England, Mexico, and California, spending several summers in Laguna Beach during the 1920s where she studied with plein air painter Anna Althea Hills. Both Sadie and Samuel Gideon became involved with the Laguna Beach Art Association. Although she was primarily a portraitist, both painters portrayed numerous California missions. She exhibited landscapes and portraits in Texas exhibitions and taught art in Austin, where her husband taught at the University of Texas. Sunday Morning depicts Mission San Juan Capistrano, Capistrano.
