The origins of the word can be traced back to villages of the same name, Mir and Mirshi, in the south of Ardabil. They are made in the West Persian regions of Sarouk and Seraband. The Mir pattern is a uniform field pattern and is also called Mir Boteh or flea pattern. It reoccurs on a red, dark blue, and rarely also on a cream-coloured background.
