Saryk Torba

[ translate ]

first half 19th century, 38 x 113 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan

In terms of its design of six primary guls, chemche secondary guls and kochanak hooks in the border, this Saryk torba does not differ from Tekke torbas of the same format. However, the colours including orange, yellow and bottle green are quite dissimilar, and white cotton is used to accentuate the primary guls. The knotting structure using symmetrical knots is a key identifying feature of Saryks.

PINNER, ROBERT & EILAND, MURRAY L. Jr., Between the Black Desert and the Red. Turkmen Carpets from the Wiedersperg Collection. San Francisco 1999, pl. 8
