Sasanian Chalcedony Stamp Seal Bead w/ Standing Figure
Ancient Near East/Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian/Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. A fascinating stamp seal bead of ovoid form, pierced through for suspension, and carved from a beautiful banded cream-colored chalcedony. One face is flattened and incised with a symbol of a crouching human figure with incised lines around the face. The figure holds a staff in one hand. This would have been worn on a cord around the neck or wrist and used as a personal seal by someone performing administrative duties. Size: 0.45" W x 0.8" H (1.1 cm x 2 cm); 2.3" H (5.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired before 2004
