Sassanian / Sasanid 20K+ Gold Hoop Earring

Ancient Near East, Sasanian (Sassanian, Sasanid) Empire, ca. 3rd to 8th century CE. A gorgeous hoop earring formed from 84% gold (equivalent to 20K+ gold). The hollow circular form was shaped by flattening a small sheet of gold, rolling into a cylindrical form, and gently bending the form around a mandrill while filled with sand or other material to hold the tubular form without bending or creasing the walls. Each openwork terminal boasts a stamped cord-like pattern around their circumference which creates an elegant accent. Size: 1.1" Diameter (2.8 cm); quality of gold: 84% (equivalent to 20K+); total weight: 3.8 grams.
