Sassanian Serpentine Stamp Seal Bead w/ Bust - Recut

Ancient Near East/Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian/Sassanid) Empire, ca. 224 to 651 CE. A serpentine O-type seal with a central piercing for suspension and engraved with the bust of a bearded man and a Pahlavi inscription. On the ovoid stamp face is the young man facing left, wearing a cap and earrings, his hair set in a bun and below is a pair of wings. Above, an inscription in Pahlavi and a crescent moon to the right. The conical handle is also deeply carved with petaloid shaped grooves. This seal was recut in modern times to sharpen and enhance the motifs, and a custom putty impression of the seal is included. Size: 1" L x 1" W (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
