[ translate ]

Height: 98 cm Provenance: French private collection Exhibition: 1988, Blagnac, France Galerie Gaunt Tribal Art, United Kingdom ref SQ4334857 Dating: 1940's The mask will be supplied with a document of provenance The mask is not sold with its support - Possibility to have a custom made for 70 € and 2 weeks waiting period. The strength of the rectangular mask, separated by the nasal septum, contrasts with its simplicity with the very careful wooden statuette. This statuette represents the first woman who was consecrated as Yasigine by the Andoumboulou. According to Hélène Leloup, the first Satimbe was produced in the 1850s by a man named Ambagono from the village of Yabatalou, because he was struck by the beauty of a young girl called Timbe. This mask having been a great success, this sculptor and his successors would have repeated it (H. Leloup, 1994, P. 562) The Yasigine "Woman of the Sigi" or sister of the masks, is the only woman to play an active role in the rites of the Awa and, therefore, she occupies an eminent position in society. She takes part in drinking parties at Sigi, approaches masked men during funeral ceremonies and can mingle with certain dances. Its role consists mainly in quenching the masked dancers at rest and in preparing sesame oil which is added to millet beer on certain occasions. More generally, she is the servant of the men of the Awa. So when a dancer falls, he must immediately withdraw among his comrades and the yasigine comes to kneel at the place of the fall, pushing youyous in mourning: failing to perform this special ritual for his funeral and his dama, who gives rise to a release of masks. Shipping within 24 working hours Tracking number included Delivery against signature Tags: mask, statue, sculpture, figure, figurine, wood, art, france, belgium, netherlands, usa, dogon, contemporary, first, primitive, tribal, african, antiquity, work, gallery, picasso, giacometti, galerie d art, African art, cubism
